Through a very simple and ingenious arrangement placing the movement in its heart, Xavier Le Roy offers to see and to listen to Lachenmann’s score differently.
Two guitar players hidden behind screens play Helmut Lachenmann’s music while two other interpreters, to be seen, follow the parts and play without instruments. Slowly the body movements go past the sheer representation of the music and enter a complementary dimension where the interpreters express the emotions felt by listening to the music. This seeming dissociation excites our perception of the music and highlights its peculiar notes. With Salut für Caudwell, a guitar duet by Helmut Lachenmann, Xavier Le Roy starts with the perceptible space between the movement of an action and the sound produced, and then he extends the composer’s process by undoing the mimetic link between note, action and sound. Every possible disassociations between what one can listen to, not listen to, hear or not hear, see or not see are deployed in the play and empower each individual’s senses.
